February/March 2017 Fishing Report featuring TUNA!

TunaFishing Report February/March 2017 Greetings from beautiful, warm and sunny Drake Bay, Costa Rica! As the temperature begins to heat up, so has the fishing. The story of 2017 so far has been TUNA! We have been regularly catching Big Eye, Yellow Fin and even the occasional Albacore Tuna less than 10 miles from the Bay. Tuna are not only fun to catch but the most delicious sushi right on the boat or seared tuna steaks prepared at your lodge or local restaurant. There is nothing like eating a fish that is only hours old. For those anglers who are a bit more adventurous, we have been very successful in finding huge schools of big Tuna offshore. Experienced anglers can…

December/January Fishing Report: Mahi-Mahi

December/January Fishing Report: Mahi-Mahi   Marlin and Mahi-Mahi We are thankful the fish in Drake Bay are not on holiday. Our Clients have enjoyed 15+ hook ups on nice Roosterfish in the last few weeks. We are not exactly sure why this is happening but we aren’t complaining. On another very positive note, we are catching some very nice Mahi-Mahi or Dorado or Dolphin depending on where you are from. We are also catching and releasing a ton of baby Mahi-Mahi’s on our sabiki rigs while we are fishing for bait. This is a great sign for the health of the population as Mahi-Mahi are a very fast growing fish. Sailfish are starting to arrive in our waters in better numbers, this will…

October/November 2016 Fishing Report

October TunaOctober/November 2016 Fishing Report October is typically a month with lots of wind and rain in Drake Bay, this year was certainly no exception. We use this time to take the Reel Escape & the Reel Time out of the water for the month to complete routine maintenance, scrub and paint  the hull and generally make sure the boats are in perfect condition for the high season. As we head out of October and into November the weather slowly begins to cooperate. We have had several trips in the first week of the month and we are pleased to report that we are catching a ton of Big Eye Tuna! The best part is that our clients are only having…

July/August Fishing Report-Marlin

July/August Fishing Report featuring Marlin   Marlin July As the water begins to cool in July around Drake Bay and Cano Island we are seeing more Blue and Black Marlin bust through our spread. Two Mother/Daughter teams successfully released a big Black Marlin recently on a 30 weight reel.  This beauty was estimated at 500 lbs.  After the successful release the ladies then caught 11 nice Yellow Fin Tuna, 3 on top water baits. Way to go ladies.  While the Sailfish bite is a little slow this time of year, the bite for big Roosterfish on live bait has been very strong.  Catching and releasing a big Roosterfish on a spinning rod needs to be a bucket list item for every fisherman.…

May Fishing Report

May Fishing Report featuring Wahoo   Fishing wahooThe month of May begins a transitionary period for the waters around Drake Bay and the Osa Peninsula. The bad news is that the Sailfish bite begins to slow down but the great news is the Wahoo have shown up in good numbers . We expect these fast swimming, beautiful fish will be in our local waters through August. Wahoo are not only fun to catch but make incredible sashimi and sushi. At this time of year the water begins to cool down and the wind picks up in the afternoon. This means more favorable conditions for Marlin. In our area we are lucky enough to have not only Blue Marlin but the occasional…
