May Fishing Report
May Fishing Report featuring Wahoo
The month of May begins a transitionary period for the waters around Drake Bay and the Osa Peninsula. The bad news is that the Sailfish bite begins to slow down but the great news is the Wahoo have shown up in good numbers . We expect these fast swimming, beautiful fish will be in our local waters through August. Wahoo are not only fun to catch but make incredible sashimi and sushi. At this time of year the water begins to cool down and the wind picks up in the afternoon. This means more favorable conditions for Marlin. In our area we are lucky enough to have not only Blue Marlin but the occasional Black and Striped will bust through the spread.
On recent trips, our clients have been catching and releasing a lot of Roosterfish. Most of these hard fighting fish are caught on live bait but skilled anglers have been catching a few on poppers. The local lodges have been very happy recently as our clients have been bringing a lot of Grouper, Yellow Fin and Big Eye Tuna for the chef to cook for dinner.
Although the “high season” for tourism in Costa Rica is over, many people enjoy the slightly cooler weather, a nice breeze, the occasional rain shower and great fishing.
Until next time, tight lines…
