There is exciting news to share from the beautiful village of Drake Bay, Costa Rica. The big news is the recent renovation of the airport has been completed and the airport is open for business. With the new, extended concrete runway Drake Bay airport is able to accommodate larger aircraft and more daily flights. Sansa Airlines services Drake Bay and now Aerobell has added daily flights into Drake Bay. Several other airlines have expressed interest in flying in to Drake Bay now as well, so we are waiting for more information about added flights.
In addition to the airport expansion, a new bridge will be constructed over the river making the trip into town much easier regardless of the season. We are also excited about the new private medical clinic that recently opened. There are two doctors on call for routine medical care and more importantly they will coordinate emergency evacuations and transportation to the hospital when needed.
Although it’s getting easier to get to Drake Bay and we are enjoying some more modern amenities, don’t expect it to ever turn into Jaco, Los Suenos or Quepos. Since Drake Bay is located at the northern end of the world famous Corcovado National Park, the road literally ends in Drake Bay. This is a place where nature is king and wildlife is everywhere. Tourists flock here for the incredible in-shore and off-shore fishing, hiking , bird watching, or just to relax in a beautiful and natural setting. Drake Bay is also the closest place for tours to Cano Island for amazing snorkeling and scuba diving. Cano Island is a protected park and marine sanctuary ensuring it’s crystal clear waters will be enjoyed by our children and grand children. If you are thinking about a trip to Costa Rica, Drake Bay is a must stop.
