Tuna, Tuna, Tuna

January/February 2020 Fishing Report

Greetings from your off-the-beaten-path destination in Costa Rica for awesome fishing.  The start of this year’s weather pattern brought us a little more rain and cooler temperatures than normal.  The cooler water temperatures have certainly helped the overall fishing here.  In Drake Bay, we are blessed to have tons of places to fish, many just outside the bay.  Because we are bordered by land that can never be developed (Osa and Corcovado) the scenery is stunning.  Instead of condos and cars we see nothing but beautiful beaches and rain forest.  As an added bonus, the undeveloped Cano Island is just 12 miles from our homeport and as any angler knows structure holds fish. For those people who prefer to…

Fishing Report September-November

Greetings from the remote and beautiful waters of Drake Bay on the Southern Pacific Coast.  As we move more into the rainy or “Green” season expect the fishing to remain strong but the showers to be more prevalent.  Unfortunately, this is typically a time when not many tourists visit Drake Bay.  This is a shame because not only are the Snook, Snapper and Tuna biting but clients on board our boats are treated to a whale show. The magnificent Humpback Whale migration is something you don’t want to miss.  If you have ever been scuba diving while the whales are here, it’s truly magical to hear their cries as these highly intelligent animals communicate with each other.   For those…

How to Catch Big Tuna Offshore in Costa Rica

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of FECOP and other organizations that protect the waters of Costa Rica, the Tuna are back with a vengeance for sport fishermen.  My fellow Captains and I can remember just a few years ago catching a Tuna was a big deal and a real treat for our clients.  Nowadays, the Tuna are plentiful and we hope and expect it to stay that way for many years.  Having said that, it’s not so easy to consistently catch these beauties.  Often times traditional Tuna lures like cedar plugs simply don’t work.  As more people fish for Tuna, the fish get smarter and more selective (especially the bigger ones).  However, because we are in such a remote location…

March & April 2019 Fishing Report

March/April 2019 Fishing Report Greetings from the beautiful and remote waters of Drake Bay, Costa Rica.  As we begin to transition out of the dry season, the fishing patterns begin to change as well.  We are now enjoying a little rain in the evening and waking up to a beautiful and clear sunrise over the mountains.  In the last two months, we have experienced a pretty solid Sailfish bite and a very good Marlin bite. Most of the Marlin have been hooked “by accident” while trolling for Sails or Mahi. All but one of the fish have been Blues in the 200-250 lb. range.  On March 13th, one lucky fisherman from Denmark hooked an approximate 500 lb. Black Marlin…

January and February 2019 Fishing Report

Greetings from the beautiful and remote waters of Drake Bay, Costa Rica on the Southern Pacific Coast.  January and February have been nothing short of amazing.  We have literally been fishing everyday for the last two months and our clients have been extremely happy!  While we have not been catching as many Mahi as we did in November and December, the ones we have been catching have been averaging about 30 pounds.  As the Mahi have thinned out a little, the Tuna have taken their place.  They are here in great numbers and much closer than they usually are.  It’s not unusual for our clients to catch so many they have had “enough”.  After a little water, rest and a…
